Jewish tradition honors life’s significant transitions with meaningful rituals. We embrace these moments in life — whether of joy or grief — with respect, wisdom and great care.

Learn about these events at Wilshire Boulevard Temple.

Birth & Baby

Before your baby is born our clergy meet with you to discuss Hebrew names, the Brit Milah (circumcision) ceremony for boys, and our recommendations for a Mohel, or the naming ceremony for girls. Once the baby is born the rabbi will be there for these ceremonies to help you and your family celebrate and welcome your new child into the Jewish people.

Bar/Bat Mitzvah

Our religious school will begin preparing children for Bar and Bat Mitzvah beginning in fourth grade. The process accelerates in sixth or seventh grade in a yearlong series of meetings with our cantor and rabbis, culminating in a beautiful Shabbat morning ceremony at either our historic Temple campus, the Irmas Campus in West LA, or the outdoor chapel at our camps in Malibu.

Weddings

Our rabbis and cantor love to do weddings. More importantly, they enjoy the process and series of meetings with each couple, meant to prepare them not only for the ceremony, but also for the beginning of their Jewish life together. Each rabbi and the cantor are available to meet with couples several times leading up to the joyous event.

Birthdays & Anniversaries

Judaism teaches us to sanctify time. We are taught to be grateful for the gifts of life and love. We are honored to call up to the Bimah for special blessings people celebrating birthdays and anniversaries. These blessings are a regular part of our Erev Shabbat and Shabbat morning services.

Funerals/Memorials

When sorrow comes, our clergy know how to show up, to hold you, to guide you through what must be done and to do it in as loving, meaningful and supportive way as possible. In the case where death is expected, the rabbis are available to visit the sick and the aged and to help their families in pre-need arrangements for the cemetery and funeral. Following the funeral our clergy will be honored to lead Shiva minyan services for the family as well. We also offer grief support groups for two years following the loss of a loved one.

Facility Usage

Wilshire Boulevard Temple makes its facilities available to members for life-cycle events, as well as to social and civic organizations on a fee basis. For information, please call Polly Preston, Assistant Executive Director, at 213-388-2401, x. 420.

Adult Bar/Bat Mitzvah

For many reasons some Jewish adults missed out on the opportunity to become a Bar or Bat Mitzvah at thirteen. By taking classes on Sunday mornings during the school year for two years, adults learn how to read, chant and interpret the Torah. Their learning ends with an always powerful and moving Bar or Bat Mitzvah ceremony in the late spring or early summer.
