Social Action/Tikkun Olam

Tikkun Olam

In Torah we read, Tzedek, tzedek tirdof — Righteousness, righteousness you must pursue! We respond to that mitzvah in many ways as we address the various imbalances in the world.

The beach environment that needs constant care, the homeless yearning for transformation to independence, the hungry unable to feed their family; these are but a few of the many areas in which Wilshire Boulevard Temple’s congregants have joined together to create a culture where tikkun olam is not a special event — but an everyday part of our communal life.

Every year the Tikkun Olam Committee looks for opportunities that not only are meaningful and inspiring for the congregation, but most importantly — make a difference in the community and the world in which we live.

Join us in a program recognized as one of the nation’s best by the Religious Action Center—there is something for every age and every stage!

SOCIAL JUSTICE

Speak Out and Make LA a Better Place to Live!

Community organizing - sharing our stories and banding together with others in our neighborhood - can create great changes in cities. In Baltimore, synagogues and churches worked together to win the first local living-wage ordinance in the country, which spurred more than one hundred successful living wage campaigns across the United States. A Miami coalition convinced the city's housing agency to require high-end real-estate developers to create a significant percentage of affordable housing units.

Here in LA, we've got big problems: homelessness, healthcare, traffic, and much more. What can YOU do? SIGN UP FOR A CHANGE: Click Here, leave us your name, phone number, and email address, and we will contact you for a house meeting to hear your concerns and your dreams for a better city. As we gather our community's input, we become stronger and more aware of what issue we will focus on to press for change in Los Angeles.

SOCIAL ACTION

Farm To Family

WESTIDERS: WE NEED YOU!

Farm to Family provides fresh produce donated by farmers' markets to people in need. Much of this food would perish as waste if it was not delivered promptly to the homeless. We organize motivated volunteers to pick up unsold produce from markets on the Westside of Los Angeles and deliver it to families living in transitional centers. We are expanding our network of motivated volunteers--join this great project!

Food Pantry

Sunday morning on Davidson Patio is the heartbeat of tikkun olam. We serve those who need the basics: food and toiletries. We welcome the neighborhood with open arms and make a difference. With volunteers from age 5 to 85, there's always a place for you!

Sundays, 8:15 a.m. to 9:45 a.m.

Temple Campus, Davidson Patio

Super Sundays at P.A.T.H. (People Assisting the Homeless)

P.A.T.H.'s work is world renowned: transformation is the norm here. Tour this architectural marvel, then cook, dine, and be inspired as you encounter men, women, and children leaving homelessness behind for a life of independence and self-respect. Come with us or create your own group of up to 10 adults and teens!

Sundays, 4:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.

Contact Phyl or Rabbi Stein at the Temple for more information.

Clothing Collection Bins

Drop off new and gently used clothing to benefit those in need. Our partners, Food On Foot and the National Council for Jewish Women will ensure your donations will make a difference. See the drop off bins at Temple and Irmas Campuses.

PAWS/LA(Pets are Wonderful Support)

Do you love pets? Care for people? PAWS/LA needs volunteers to deliver pet food to homebound clients, prepare "goodie bags" for dogs and cats, and much more. This is a special opportunity for kids and parents to work together to fulfill B'nei Mitzvah tikkun olam and/or community service requirements. Please call 323-464-7297 or visit www.pawsla.org for more information.

KorehLA

Read for just one hour, once a week with a child and transform his/her ability to learn. Over 30 congregants have volunteered; this year make it your turn to "step up to the plate." You arrange your own day and your own schedule.

NEW THIS YEAR--Opportunities for teens as well as adults!
